Robin Carolan
Robin Carolan is a British-Irish composer and music producer whose distinct artistic voice has gained prominence in both the music and film industries having scored Robert Eggers’ Viking epic The Northman (2022) and the upcoming Nosferatu (2024).
He first garnered attention as the founder of Tri Angle, an independent music label launched in 2010, which became synonymous with innovative and critically acclaimed releases, particularly in the electronic music realm. Carolan's collaborations with artists like Björk, where he was recognized as “the fifth ear” on her 2017 album Utopia, further cemented his reputation as a versatile and influential figure in contemporary music.
Carolan's film scoring debut came with Robert Eggers’ The Northman, a project that required him to craft a soundscape reflecting the film's brutal and atmospheric narrative. Describing the creative process, Carolan explained, Rob (Eggers) wanted the world of The Northman to feel harsh and uncomfortable, and for everything to feel like it was caked in mud and dry blood, so it was crucial for the score to mirror that." This challenge led him to explore a limited set of tools, which he found liberating. The resulting score is a cinematic masterpiece of sound and ambiance, both gorgeous and disturbing, like the film it so beautifully accompanies.
Following the success of The Northman, Carolan has reunited with Eggers for a highly anticipated reimagining of Nosferatu, set to release in 2024. This collaboration promises to further showcase his unique ability to blend atmospheric sounds with thematic depth, reinforcing his emerging identity as a formidable film composer.
