The city was alive with punk and noise and filth. And right at that time, \u003cb\u003eThe Men\u003c\/b\u003e were the show to be at. Every gig was dripping with sweat. Hallways and sidewalks were packed between sets. Chaos reigned in the pit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eThe Men\u003c\/b\u003e hit like a bag of hard cement, a hardcore band with a familiar sound but with an aura of absolute chaos and intensity, like everything was on the brink of going off the rails at every moment of their set, a downhill freight train with no brakes. During these shows one’s focus could shoot back and forth between the intimidatingly angry-eyed, shaved-headed Chris Hansell (who went on to front \u003cb\u003eWarthog\u003c\/b\u003e) and the long haired hippie punks Mark Perro, Nick Chiericozzi and Rich Samis, that made up the surrounding band. Just one of the many juxtapositions the band embraced.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIf \u003cb\u003eThe Men\u003c\/b\u003e were a chapter in Michael Azzerad’s \u003ci\u003eOur Band Could Be Your Life\u003c\/i\u003e, the early EP’s and cassettes would obviously be \u003cb\u003eMinor Threat\u003c\/b\u003e and \u003cb\u003eBlack Flag\u003c\/b\u003e, while \u003ci\u003eLeave Home\u003c\/i\u003e would likely be \u003cb\u003eSonic Youth\u003c\/b\u003e. It was just before they made the full jump into each record being a smorgasbord of underground genres, from dream pop to folk; before they had tracks called “Country Song,” for example. This was a preview of what was to come. \u003ci\u003eLeave Home\u003c\/i\u003e was a pivot from pure hardcore punk, as the band got lost in the groove in a way one couldn’t on a straight up punk record. That groove was strong on “If You Leave…,” “(),” and “Bataille,” while they spaced out on “Shittin’ With The Shah” and stayed as fierce as ever on “LADOCH.” And of course, \u003ci\u003eLeave Home\u003c\/i\u003e had a re-recording of their hardest track to date, “Think,” making it clear that they were still the moshers we all had come to know and love. If The Men raised their flag as an important New York punk band with \u003ci\u003eImmaculada\u003c\/i\u003e, they started waving it in the freakiest way with \u003ci\u003eLeave Home.\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThere is no doubt that \u003ci\u003eLeave Home\u003c\/i\u003e was one of the most influential records of the last decade.\u003ci\u003e \u003c\/i\u003eYou can hear their mark everywhere from \u003cb\u003eTy Segall\u003c\/b\u003e and \u003cb\u003eThee Oh Sees\u003c\/b\u003e to \u003cb\u003eMilk Music\u003c\/b\u003e and \u003cb\u003eHank Wood\u003c\/b\u003e. Few bands have traversed as many genres as \u003cb\u003eThe Men\u003c\/b\u003e and even fewer have done it so well. When one writer rhetorically asked: “How was Garson’s music so ubiquitous while the man remained so under the radar?” the answer was simple. Well before Brian Eno did it, Garson was making discreet music, both the man and his music as inconspicuous as a Chlorophytum comosum. Julliard-educated and active as a session player in the post-war era, Garson wrote lounge hits, scored plush arrangements for Doris Day, and garlanded weeping countrypolitan strings around Glen Campbell’s “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” He could render the Beatles and Simon \u0026amp; Garfunkel alike into easy listening and also dreamed up his own ditties. “An ide\u003cem\u003ear\u003c\/em\u003e” as Garson himself would drawl it out. “I live with it, I walk it, I sing it.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut as his daughter Day Darmet recalls: “When my dad found the synthesizer, he realized he didn’t want to do pop music anymore.” Garson encountered Robert Moog and his new device at the Audio Engineering Society’s West Coast convention in 1967 and immediately began tinkering with the device. With the Moog, those \u003cem\u003eidears\u003c\/em\u003e could be transformed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“My mom had a lot of plants,” Darmet says. “She didn’t believe in organized religion, she believed the earth was the best thing in the whole world.
