Most of all, the plants loved the ditties made by composer Mort Garson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFew characters in early electronic music can be both fearless pioneers and cheesy trend-chasers, but Garson embraced both extremes, and has been unheralded as a result. When one writer rhetorically asked: “How was Garson’s music so ubiquitous while the man remained so under the radar?” the answer was simple. Well before Brian Eno did it, Garson was making discreet music, both the man and his music as inconspicuous as a Chlorophytum comosum. Julliard-educated and active as a session player in the post-war era, Garson wrote lounge hits, scored plush arrangements for Doris Day, and garlanded weeping countrypolitan strings around Glen Campbell’s “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” He could render the Beatles and Simon \u0026amp; Garfunkel alike into easy listening and also dreamed up his own ditties. “An ide\u003cem\u003ear\u003c\/em\u003e” as Garson himself would drawl it out. “I live with it, I walk it, I sing it.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut as his daughter Day Darmet recalls: “When my dad found the synthesizer, he realized he didn’t want to do pop music anymore.” Garson encountered Robert Moog and his new device at the Audio Engineering Society’s West Coast convention in 1967 and immediately began tinkering with the device. With the Moog, those \u003cem\u003eidears\u003c\/em\u003e could be transformed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“My mom had a lot of plants,” Darmet says. “She didn’t believe in organized religion, she believed the earth was the best thing in the whole world. Whatever created us was incredible.” And she also knew when her husband had a good song, shouting from another room when she heard him humming a good \u003cem\u003eidear\u003c\/em\u003e. While those songs were tragically not recorded, the band did record a pair of covers for a new 7\". “Never Learn Not to Love” and “Cease to Exist” are the first new Psychic Ills songs to be released since 2016’s \u003cem\u003eInner Journey Out\u003c\/em\u003e, and while they no longer precede a new album as originally intended, they stand as a celebration of Tres Warren’s beautiful musical spirit. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOriginally appearing on \u003cstrong\u003eThe Beach Boys\u003c\/strong\u003e’ 1969 album \u003cem\u003e20\/20\u003c\/em\u003e, credited to Dennis Wilson and with changes to the arrangement and lyrics, \u003cem\u003eNever Learn Not To Love\u003c\/em\u003e was written as \u003cem\u003eCease To Exist \u003c\/em\u003eby a then unknown songwriter named \u003cstrong\u003eCharles Manson\u003c\/strong\u003e. His version would eventually appear on his album \u003cem\u003eLie: The Love and Terror Cult\u003c\/em\u003e, released in 1970, by which time he was already incarcerated for the events that he is most commonly known for today. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHow a version of that song came to find its way onto The Beach Boys album is the stuff of legend, and Charles Manson’s disappointment with the lyrical and structural changes is well documented. The Beach Boys simultaneous adherence to and departure from the original has long been a point of fascination for people, but Psychic Ills frontman, Tres Warren, says it’s something less tangible that has kept him coming back to both songs through the years. “The soulfulness is what has always spoken to me in those songs. I gravitate towards that(soul) in music, and both of these songs have it in spades. I almost shed a tear every time I hear Dennis Wilson sing.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePsychic Ills’ version of \u003cem\u003eNever Learn Not To Love \u003c\/em\u003eechoes the arrangement and feel of The Beach Boys recording, but the female gospel backing singers make it more reminiscent of a Phil Spector production than that of Brian Wilson. “We wanted to honor the originals, but we didn’t want to cover them note for note.” Warren says, adding “We wanted to bring them to where we are.” Which seems like an apt statement as Never Learn Not To Love is a dense electrified rock and roll song reminiscent of recent Psychic Ills songs like it. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOn the flip side of the record, Cease To Exist couldn’t be sonically more different. Where Never Learn Not To Love has a fullness from an instrumentation and sound quality standpoint, Cease To Exist thrives off the intimacy of the performance and transparency of the documentation, bringing the singing and playing into full focus, in a similar manner to the Manson original. There’s no question that this was recorded in very few takes, and that by-the-seat-of-the-pants feeling is further reinforced by the unedited studio talkback left in at the beginning. “Ivi is it rolling?” Warren asks engineer Iván Díaz Mathé as he begins the song, the band naturally falling in behind him reminiscent of jazz players adhering to both their own cosmic cues and those of the collective whole. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eNever Learn Not To Love\/Cease To Exist \u003c\/em\u003eis an interesting experiment, successful in both concept and execution, and a typically non-traditional way to announce that Psychic Ills, have a new record coming soon. They continue to be a journeyman band, in an era where few exist, and a band you can count on to continue to expand on what they do as they have with every record, but never at the expense of what makes them Psychic Ills…their feel. Jeremiah and the Children fit right in. A few years prior to assembling his flock, Sand had self produced and released an album of psych-folk that was unremarkable in almost every way, save for the unrelenting vanity and egoism on display in the lyrics. This early album is one of the only existing documents of Sand. The commercial failure of the album became the catalyst for Sand to leave Southern California and settle in a place where his \"truth\" would be \"received by pure and open hearts\".\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy mid 1974, the Children have grown in rank and Jeremiah becomes obsessed with recording \"his masterpiece\"...a musical message to the world, communicating a “Truth” that only he has been given spiritual access to. This project becomes the central focus of the Children. His lieutenant Brother Swann overhears that there is a small recording studio just North of the city. He arrives one day at the reception with a large gym bag full of cash and instructs the owner to cancel all sessions on the books. The studio will now focus on one thing and one thing only: helping Jeremiah realize his vision.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTents and rough structures appear on the surrounding property as the Children make the studio and its grounds their new home. They hold recruitment meetings where Jeremiah evangelizes in between endless recording sessions. The owner and his staff begin to feel as though they're being held hostage but the money is good and the Children keep paying. Overpaying. This goes on for years. New members drift into the sessions. A disgraced professor from the Electro Acoustic Music program at Evergreen state arrives with a full Buchla system he's \"liberated\" from the university, Jeremiah is entranced by it and for a few weeks the only sounds coming from the studio are blasts of atonal, corroded noise underpinned by ominous chanting. The mood changes. The town begins to turn against the Children. A few people have gone missing. Some teenagers. A studio engineer. By the Spring of 1977, the entire session has broken down into hallucinogen and cocaine fueled chaos. Bad vibrations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne night in early March, after a particularly grueling mixing session, the producer and owner of the studio is startled awake by an extremely agitated looking Brother Swann. Swann is sweating and wild eyed, casually holding a gun, explaining to the producer that \"plans have changed\" and that Jeremiah has \"heard a calling and a Great Summons\". They are leaving. All of them. That night. Swann directs the producer to put the existing reels in a lock box along with a short 16mm film, lyrics, album art and scribbled notes. Swann tells the producer Jeremiah will be back to finish his masterpiece. It all goes in the box and it's not to be opened until the Children return. They never do.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2018, wildfires rip through Redding, CA and burns it to the ground. Over a thousand of homes are incinerated. One rough structure north of the city is partially saved. There's a massive concrete basement filled with smoke and water damaged recording equipment and in the back...a lockbox.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNo one knows who originally took the tapes out of the charred ruin of the studio but in a few months, a very strange album is making the rounds in the more esoteric circles of the underground. A long and confusing chain of custody ensues. A lost artifact of the transitional period between the late 60s and late 70s. A flawed and malignant sounding unfinished thing, clearly the product of a psychotically inflated ego and hubris. The album is by turns: amateurish, haunting, deranged, ridiculous and (for those attuned to these things) filled with crackling negative psychic energies. So much so that Light In The Attic flat out refuses to reissue it. Initially, learning the covers was just a method for the musicians to “break the ice” and play together again for the first time without their band leader. The cover songs were chosen because of their unique connections to the band’s memories of Warren.\u003cstrong\u003e Dennis Wilson\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \"Rainbows\" and \u003cstrong\u003eFleetwood Mac\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \"Station Man\" come from two of Warren’s favorite albums, \u003cem\u003ePacific Ocean Blue\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eKiln House\u003c\/em\u003e. The band also recorded \u003cstrong\u003eBlaze Foley\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \"Clay Pigeons\" and \u003cstrong\u003ePowell St. John\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \"Right Track Now.\" The idea for the latter was suggested by Amram. Warren once sent him a clip of \u003cstrong\u003eRoky Erikson\u003c\/strong\u003e singing a moving rendition of that song in the film \u003cem\u003eDemon Angel\u003c\/em\u003e and it had stuck with him ever since.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHart wrote \"I’ll Walk With You\" on the day of Warrens’ passing, at the time not knowing what it meant. When she got the call with the heartbreaking news, it became clear to her what the song was about. Relying on a gently lilting string arrangement to set the tone, this duet features \u003cstrong\u003eMazzy Star\u003c\/strong\u003e vocalist \u003cstrong\u003eHope Sandoval\u003c\/strong\u003e alongside Hart. Sandoval previously collaborated with Psychic Ills accompanying Warren on \"I Don’t Mind\" (2016). The ideas for \"Home\" and \"Walk Around,\" two other songs on the album by Hart, started simply with an acoustic guitar and lyrics, a hopeful exercise to connect with her lost friend. Brent Cordero’s instrumental \"Whole Lotta Piece of Mind\" is nothing short of a transcendental experience. By running his pedal steel through a Leslie speaker, Jon Catfish DeLorme crafts the unique tone showcased on Wonderful Feeling, a moving example of studio experimentation combined with old school techniques. DeLorme describes it as “an attempt to highlight the musical experience I shared with Tres both sonically and thematically. What resulted is the unguarded exaltation I feel lucky to have shared with my fellow bandmates.” Adam Amram’s \"Into the Sea\" was composed spontaneously the week Warren passed. The melodic tune has a hopeful lightness and Amram describes it simply as “a song to my brother”.
